HAL Typefaces is an independent vendor for digital fonts and bespoke typographic solutions. The platform is operated by Studio HanLi, a Berlin-based setup for graphic design and typography. The detailed production of custom typefaces is an integral part of the studio’s approach and research. Type is developed for and alongside specific projects, which offer a real-time playground for continuous testing and utilisation. Graphic design influences type design and vice versa: the typefaces grow, evolve and mature, informed by a constructive and tangible practice.

“If you are having difficulty understanding a problem, try drawing a picture.
If you can’t find a solution, try assuming that you have a solution and work backward.
If the problem is abstract, try examining a concrete example or solving a more general problem first.”

Licensing
Licensing for HAL Typefaces follows the model introduced by Dinamo in 2020. Basically, the value of a typeface is dependent on the size of the company that licenses it, measured by the number of its employees. The license owner is the client. This is the person or organisation commissioning the design work and acquiring the usage rights of the font for their company. The license owner is not the commissioned designer/design agency. Via trial fonts, HAL Typefaces permits the commissioned designer/design agency to test available typefaces free of charge, including the presentation, proposal, or pitch of a project to the client.
Types of Licenses
HAL Typefaces offers three main licenses:
• Desktop (otf/ttf): for print and/or screen projects (incl. social media, motion, video)
• Web (woff/woff2): for web projects (embedded into a website)
• App (otf/ttf): for app projects (embedded in a digital product, mobile app, e-pub or video game)
If the offered formats and/or license types are not sufficient, license extensions may be required. If you are working on a more extensive design project, please contact us for more information.
Third Party Sharing
If the license owner wishes to share font files with subcontractors or other third parties involved in the project, the desktop license can be extended for third party sharing in the check-out process. A third party is anyone not employed by the license owner, for example: freelancers, external designers, design agencies, PR agencies, producers, developers, printers, etc. (This excludes the client, hence a client does not qualify as a third party.)
Student Discount
A discounted license for students is available, please inquire via email. This license covers any sort of school projects, including assignments, self-initiated projects, or design commissioned by the school (i.e. promotional materials for open days, graduation shows, lectures, events, etc.). Students can also use the licensed typefaces on their personal websites and social media.
Refunds
All sales are final, non-returnable and non-refundable. HAL Typefaces are unable to offer a refund for incorrect font licence purchases. If a font file is defective, please notify via email within 30 days of purchase and a replacement will be provided.
Customisation
HAL Typefaces offers the following services for hire:
• altering, customising and adapting retail typefaces (incl. updates on language support; adding desired symbols, icons, glyphs, etc. to the character set; expanding weights and styles; modifying open-type features)
• designing logos, logotypes and bespoke lettering
• creating custom typefaces
